Description:

The Marischal Square project, a joint venture between Aberdeen City Council and development company, Muse, is designed to rejuvenate Aberdeen city centre as a ‘vibrant’ mixed-use quarter. The £107m scheme includes two office buildings providing 173,500ft2 of Grade A office space; seven restaurants and café bars, and a 126-room Marriott Hotel.

BriggsAmasco was selected to install 4,000m2 of waterproofing to two, multi-level office roofs, the hotel and a large podium deck area, with work beginning in summer 2017. The roof installation was notable for its size and complexity. It involved the application of Bauder Bakor Hot Melt; one of the most sustainable, high-performance systems available on the market. Working to the client’s strict deadline meant BriggsAmasco’s on-site teams needed to use all their well-honed skills and experience to ensure a challenging application, which was carried out in the bustling city centre, was completed safely and to the highest specification.

The liquid-applied Bauder Bakor Hot Melt System’s sustainability was key to its specification and chimed perfectly with BriggsAmasco’s commitment to environmental procedures. The Marischal Square development was planned with the environment in mind. It contains high- quality elevations of granite and glass enclosing a development with high levels of sustainability – the offices boasting BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and EPC ‘A’ ratings. A new area of useable public space between Marischal College and the new buildings has also been created.

With other trades resident throughout the project’s waterproofing aspect, a timetable of works was drawn-up between BriggsAmasco and other on-site teams to ensure minimal disruption to respective areas of construction. Due to the development’s city centre location, site access was limited. This meant out-of-hours material delivery times had to be employed, requiring a high degree of flexibility among BriggsAmasco teams to ensure this process ran smoothly.

The on-site team’s superb diligence, coupled with BriggsAmasco’s renowned roofing expertise resulted in waterproofing works for this most high-profile project being completed to deadline and the client’s full satisfaction. The Marischal Square development was fully-opened in 2018. Its stylish rejuvenation will increase footfall and investment whilst adding a new level of desirability to a long-overlooked area of the city.
