Description:

BriggsAmasco supplied the watertight, thermally-efficient roofing solution for a new school building where noise reduction was also a major consideration.

Stopsley High School, a mixed comprehensive and community college based in Luton, required further development to support its student capacity increase from 990 to 1,350. It resulted in the construction of a new school building, comprising 64 classrooms, a four-court sports hall, creative and music spaces and a special needs facility. In conjunction with contractors, Interserve and acoustic consultants, Arup, BriggsAmasco was selected to supply a total of four roofs to cover the building’s various aspects. The installation not only had to achieve a thermal performance of 0.15 W/m2K, it was required to meet the stringent acoustic performance requirements of BB93. It also had to achieve a target noise reduction of Rw44Db as well as control noise generated in high traffic areas of the school, such as the sports hall and music rooms.

For the main roof area above the classrooms, BriggsAmasco supplied a built-up system comprising IKO Permatec, a versatile, durable hot-melt system, followed by XENERGY SL Dow insulation – a ‘new generation’ extruded polystyrene board for improved thermal performance. Marshall paving slabs and gravel supplied a smart, uniform, hard-wearing finish.

In all other areas covering the gym and assembly hall, etc, approximately 600m2 of the 150mm HARDROCK® Multi-Fix (DD) and 105mm HARDROCK® Multi-Fix (DD) were installed. This was topped with IKO Ultra Prevent – the latest generation of high-performance, elastomeric reinforced bitumen roofing membranes.

As well as meeting the required thermal and acoustic standards, BriggsAmasco installers were working to a strict deadline between February and December to ensure the building was complete for its official opening. This was achieved to the full satisfaction of the school and doubtless, the gratification of students whose learning experience – thanks to the experience and diligence of BriggsAmasco’s roofing team – has been heightened with the addition of a modern, state-of-the-art building that excels in terms of practicality and performance.
