The Square Chapel Centre for the Arts, one of 600 listed building in Halifax, attracts 40,000 visitors a year to the 300 plays it stages annually. Built in 1772, the site was taken over in 1988 by the Square Chapel Trust – a consortium of local theatre lovers – who transformed the derelict structure and in 2012, gained Arts Council backing for a £5.4 million redevelopment to include an extension to accommodate a new 120-seat auditorium and cinema.
Main contractor, Wildgoose Construction, selected BriggsAmasco to install the extension’s two-tier roof on account of the company’s ability to deliver a complete ‘one-stop-shop’ waterproofing system including single-ply membrane, hot works and PPC capping.
The roof installation work, which was carried out in conjunction with the main contractors, began in August 2016. It involved BriggsAmasco’s skilled engineers supplying and applying a self-adhesive vapour control layer to the extended building’s high-level roof. This was followed by tapered PIR insulation and an Armourplan single-ply, fully-adhered membrane. PPC capping was applied to all parapet wall tops to ensure a uniform, aesthetically-pleasing finish.
For the lower roof, the versatile IKO Permatec Hot Melt Waterproofing System was supplied and installed. A total of 180m2 Energy insulation was then applied and finished with Marshall Perfecta Natural Paving Slabs for a high-quality roof which looks as good as it performs.
The superb craftsmanship of BriggsAmasco’s onsite team, coupled with their excellent cooperative relationship with Wildgoose Construction in ensuring works were coordinated in line with the project’s requirements, meant the extension’s 500m2 roofing area was waterproofed to the client’s agreed timeframe and complete satisfaction.
The new extension, which is due to open in May 2018, has provided an 18th century building with an exciting 21st century feature, which thanks to BriggsAmasco, will create a safe and comfortable environment for visitors to enjoy the theatrical surroundings for many years to come.
