Description:
BriggsAmasco, has installed a high performance green roof system at the British Museum’s stunning new £135 million World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre (WCEC).
Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) and construction managed by Mace, the new Centre is one of the largest redevelopment projects in the Museum’s 260 year history. The Centre provides a new public exhibitions gallery, state-of-the-art laboratories and studios, world class stores for the collection, as well as facilities to support an extensive UK and international loan programme.
Integral to the design of the ambitious new centre is a 600m2 green roof, for which construction manager Mace turned to the UK’s leading waterproofing and roofing specialist, BriggsAmasco. The company installed an inverted system comprising IKO PermaTEC Hot Melt System, insulation ballast, along with green and brown bio-diverse finishes, aluminium trims, flashings and copings, all of which had to be completed to an exceptionally high standard and in keeping with the architect’s aesthetic vision.
Throughout the design process, the BriggsAmasco team worked closely with the design team to ensure that all detailed sections were suitably integrated to deliver the most robust solutions. A high level of planning was essential to ensure the assignment was not affected, and that all areas could proceed as planned.
A major part of the project focused on the bio-diversity of the green roof finishes installed at roof level comprising a mix of paving ballast and planters, which will be used as a test bed for future green developments in the capital.
The design and quality of the installation was also key to the project’s success, this is particularly evident in the pressed aluminium flashings and trims, which were installed by the BriggsAmasco specialist team to a high degree of accuracy to tie-in with the ethos of the Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners design.
With the centre now complete and the first exhibition displayed in the new gallery, BriggsAmasco’s ability to combine exceptional workmanship with attention to detail has aided the construction of the centre’s new roofing system from design to delivery, ensuring it is protected from the elements for years to come.
