Description:

BriggsAmasco completed a challenging car park installation to ensure the safe, waterproof operation of a state-of-the-art travel hub.

The company was contracted by Mace to execute the Laureate Project located within the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Featuring a 17,500-strong community of healthcare professionals and research scientists, the Cambridge Biomedical Campus is established as one of the world’s leading centres of biomedical excellence. The site is currently undergoing a major expansion. It includes the creation of the Cambridge Travel Hub, an uber-modern facility comprising a car park, cycle storage, showers, a café, and a logistics centre. BriggsAmasco was tasked with the critical responsibility of installing the car park’s surface.

Covering a huge area totalling 4,514m², the car park required a smooth, slip and ingress-resistant surface that upheld the highest levels of safety whilst providing a sharp, clean aesthetic. To achieve this, BriggsAmasco installed IKO Permapark, polymer-modified mastic asphalt paving.

BriggsAmasco operatives encountered two key obstacles throughout the project duration. Initially, weight constraints imposed on the site necessitated the use of smaller machinery and half-loading the machines, which proved challenging. It required teams to leverage their technical expertise to successfully overcome the constraints and deliver the project as per the client’s specifications.

There was a noticeable knowledge gap regarding mastic asphalt installation among the clients and other site-based trades. To address this, BriggsAmasco implemented an education programme aimed at enlightening the clients and the other trades about the installation processes and the benefits of mastic asphalt. This educational effort proved successful in bridging the knowledge gap among stakeholders.

Despite the challenges faced, BriggsAmasco delivered the project within the stipulated timeline. The mastic asphalt installation was of exceptional quality and surpassed the client’s expectations. The project was completed ahead of schedule, despite minor delays caused by other trades on the site.

In summary, the Laureate Project was a major success for BriggsAmasco. The company delivered a high-quality mastic asphalt installation, meeting the client’s requirements and exceeding their expectations.
