Opening to the public on 13th September 2011, Westfield Stratford City is the new £1.45 billion retail and leisure destination in the heart of East London, with a total of 5,000 parking spaces. One of its car parks, located directly over a retail area, required an aesthetic decking system to be installed over an inverted, well-insulated roof to ensure an attractive, watertight surface for cars and pedestrians.
Faced with a tight deadline, other trades on site and the obvious logistical challenges of the application, BriggsAmasco had to use careful project co-ordination to ensure the process would run smoothly. With a sequential installation, use of cranes to transport plant and materials onto the roof and the expertise of its highly skilled team, BriggsAmasco completed the project within the six month timeframe.
For the car park, BriggsAmasco supplied and installed the full specification from the deck up – including Permatec hot melt system, Floormate insulation, Floormate MinK separating layer and the Pardak slab paving system.
The fully bonded Permatec hot melt system was chosen for its waterproofing and environmental credentials. A monolithic system, it was fully bonded to the structural deck and is ideal for inverted or paved roofing areas as it offers a self-sealing capability with rapid setting. This was followed by the application of a 200mm layer of Floormate insulation.
Laid loose over the insulation, BriggsAmasco then applied the Roofmate MinK system in place of a traditional separating layer. This helps to minimise heat loss due to rainwater cooling and therefore reduce the amount of insulation required, providing a cost effective and energy efficient solution for a large urban car park subjected to the unpredictable British weather.
The decking system was completed with the installation of the Pardak paving system on supports. With a proven lifespan of more than 30 years, the paving slabs provide an aesthetically appealing finish, befitting of such a high profile project, combined with the durability required for a heavily trafficked car park surface.
More than 6.5 million shoppers entered Westfield Stratford City shopping centre within its first eight weeks of opening, with many using the stunning new car park. Thanks to the high performance decking system provided by BriggsAmasco, the car park is set to provide a safe and reliable surface as it continues to welcome millions of shoppers every year.
