Supply Chain Sustainability School, Birmingham
On 14th June 2016, Andy Smith (pictured), Finance & HR Director and Janice Tyler, Environment & Supply Chain Manager, attended the 4th year anniversary day of the Supply Chain Sustainability School in Birmingham.
The day centred around four key sustainability challenges:
- Local Supply and Employment
- Skills/Apprentices
- Waste/Resource Efficiency
- Carbon
As is usual with the School events, there was a combination of presentations and interactive group work.
The presentations were diverse, including what was learnt from London 2012, the changing industry priorities for contractors, what the industry will look like in 2025 and addressing the skills gap in construction.
The group work in the morning involved each table of eight discussing one of the challenges listed above. As HR Director, Andy took the lead in the table discussion on skills and apprentices and then presented our views to the room.
The afternoon was an innovation bootcamp and Janice brought the principles of that back to BriggsAmasco and adapted it into a short workshop for our annual forum in July.
BriggsAmasco Star Apprentice helps promote video to tackle roofing skills shortage
BriggsAmasco apprentice, Ben Revitt, features in a new video by the Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRA) to promote its high quality apprenticeship training programmes. Designed to tackle a nationwide skills shortage across the UK roofing industry, the courses offer onsite/offsite training to ensure the highest standards in single ply roofing installation are met. The schemes are a superb opportunity for trainees to earn a diploma and full NVQ qualification in single ply roofing as well as a CSCS card, the leading skills certification within the UK construction industry.
BriggsAmasco apprentice, Ben Revitt, has already put his single ply roofing skills to the test in the competitive arena. In 2015, along with a number of the roofing industry’s younger, leading lights, he took part in WorldSkills UK, held at Birmingham’s NEC, where he constructed a single ply roofing rig over the event’s three days. Earlier this year, as further evidence of his growing reputation within the industry, Ben was selected to take part in the World Championship of Young Roofers in Poland.
