The experience and skill of BriggsAmasco’s design and installation teams ensured a challenging and complex, multi-roof refurbishment at Edinburgh Airport was planned and carried out without interruption to flights and terminal businesses.

BriggsAmasco, the UK’s leading national commercial roofing company, was chosen for the supply, design and installation of replacement roof works to the West Wing of Edinburgh Airport. In conjunction with the project’s main contractor, Balfour Beatty, BriggsAmasco’s in-house team selected a proven waterproof system for several roofs of differing shape, size and covering over a 3,500m2 area. The team’s attention to detail in providing a suitable design solution for an installation of such complexity was key to BriggsAmasco’s specification for the project.

Providing a replacement roof whilst the airport remained in full operation presented a number of significant challenges. Installation work, some of which was carried out just metres away from passenger gates and runways, had to be completed with zero disruption to flights or 24-hour businesses housed within the airport. As the refurbishment project began in November 2015, it meant teams had inclement weather along with noise and vibration of nearby aircraft to contend with. Replacement roof works comprised four different types of deck, each requiring coordination to the other, as well as individual specification. To overcome this convoluted detail, an issue made all the more challenging by bad weather “stripping” existing areas of roofing to reveal damage previously unknown, BriggsAmasco in conjunction with Bauder who supplied the replacement system, developed bespoke solutions in-situ to accommodate additional findings.

BriggsAmasco applied a mix of Bauder’s felt and liquid-applied waterproof roof membranes to the airport’s west wing. The team’s superb attention to detail in the form of risk assessments, method statements and works sequencing, ensured each installation across the different roof areas was completed with precise strategic planning and methodology. At peak times, BriggsAmasco employed as many as three Bauder-approved installation teams working in 24-hour shifts to ensure refurbishment also took place during less-busy times as the safety of airport passengers and staff was paramount.

Thanks to BriggsAmasco’s expert preparation and installation skills, the incredibly challenging refurbishment at Edinburgh Airport was completed to the client’s strict, six-month deadline and full satisfaction. BriggsAmasco’s excellent delivery of the project earned the company a nomination in the Reinforced Bituminous Membrane category at this year’s NRFC Awards, which it subsequently won!
