General
Sustainability is at the heart of what is done in the roofing and waterproofing industry, and we at BriggsAmasco have been no different. For 160 years, our organisation has been invested in the development of sustainable roofing solutions, providing our clients with a variety of options which mitigate waste, improve efficiency, and integrate longevity.
More recently, BriggsAmasco (BA) has undertaken significant strides to prepare for the release of our long-term sustainability strategy, due to be published in 2025. As part of our efforts, BA underwent departmental restructuring to better facilitate efficient crossover between the supply chain and sustainability functions. For 2024, we further increased the scope of our emissions inventory, accounting for every element of our scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
Our intention for the coming years is to further refine our emissions inventory by shifting away from spend based emissions factors. We have already begun close collaboration with our core suppliers to request quarterly purchase reports and corroborate these against the available Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) library to provide our clients and stakeholders with a highly accurate view of our company carbon footprint.
Our sustainability report for 2024 is available below for readers to gain a view of our environmental performance and achievements over the past year.
Carbon Literacy
Integrating sustainable practices cannot be done via a top-down approach alone. Therefore, establishing buy in is a critical stepping stone towards enabling long lasting changes in healthier and sustainably conscious behaviours amongst our staff.
BriggsAmasco collaborated with the Carbon Literacy Project (CLP) to create a tailor-made training course which received accreditation in November 2024. As underlined by the project name, the aim of the course is to upskill our workforce and make them ‘literate’ on a range of environmental issues which affect the planet, their communities, and our business. CLP operates across the globe and has recently achieved a figure surpassing 100,000 Carbon Literate individuals. BriggsAmasco intends to add to this number and our aim by Q2 2025 is to become the first roofing and waterproofing contractor in the UK to be a Carbon Literate Organisation.
We recently unveiled our Carbon Literacy Course in February 2025, by first delivering a full day of training to our Board of Directors. Over the coming months we aim to make as many members of our staff Carbon Literate and further aim to track how upskilling our staff is having a direct impact upon our carbon reduction strategy.
Renewable Energy
In our drive to enhance sustainability, we installed 100 photovoltaic panels onto the roof of our Head Office in 2024. We further installed 4 Electric Vehicles (EV) charging points, providing users with 21kWh of charging capacity – encouraging our staff to make sustainable and more environmentally friendly driving choices.
Over the course of Q3-Q4 2024, BA was able to generate over 20,000kWh of electricity of which we exported more than half of this to National Grid.
Our additional introduction of 4 (20kWh) batteries has provided us with an overall battery capacity of 80kWh. This feature will enable BA to store and utilise greater amounts of the energy we generate ourselves and enter periods of total self-sufficiency in the peak summer months, thereby reducing dependency upon the grid.
