Supply Chain Sustainability School, Birmingham
On 14th June 2016, Andy Smith (pictured), Finance & HR Director and Janice Tyler, Environment & Supply Chain Manager, attended the 4th year anniversary day of the Supply Chain Sustainability School in Birmingham.
The day centred around four key sustainability challenges:
- Local Supply and Employment
- Skills/Apprentices
- Waste/Resource Efficiency
- Carbon
As is usual with the School events, there was a combination of presentations and interactive group work.
The presentations were diverse, including what was learnt from London 2012, the changing industry priorities for contractors, what the industry will look like in 2025 and addressing the skills gap in construction.
The group work in the morning involved each table of eight discussing one of the challenges listed above. As HR Director, Andy took the lead in the table discussion on skills and apprentices and then presented our views to the room.
The afternoon was an innovation bootcamp and Janice brought the principles of that back to BriggsAmasco and adapted it into a short workshop for our annual forum in July.

BriggsAmasco Star Apprentice helps promote video to tackle roofing skills shortage
BriggsAmasco apprentice, Ben Revitt, features in a new video by the Single Ply Roofing Industry (SPRA) to promote its high quality apprenticeship training programmes. Designed to tackle a nationwide skills shortage across the UK roofing industry, the courses offer onsite/offsite training to ensure the highest standards in single ply roofing installation are met. The schemes are a superb opportunity for trainees to earn a diploma and full NVQ qualification in single ply roofing as well as a CSCS card, the leading skills certification within the UK construction industry.
BriggsAmasco apprentice, Ben Revitt, has already put his single ply roofing skills to the test in the competitive arena. In 2015, along with a number of the roofing industry’s younger, leading lights, he took part in WorldSkills UK, held at Birmingham’s NEC, where he constructed a single ply roofing rig over the event’s three days. Earlier this year, as further evidence of his growing reputation within the industry, Ben was selected to take part in the World Championship of Young Roofers in Poland.

BriggsAmasco and Sika Liquid Plastics restores the past at York Royal Theatre
As part of a £4.1 million re-development project at the prestigious York Theatre Royal, BriggsAmasco Leeds and Sika Liquid Plastics delivered an outstanding roof refurbishment, requiring extremely complex detailing around 31 new roof lights.
The area that presented the biggest challenge for BriggsAmasco was the flat roof above the atrium of the theatre, a grade ll* Listed 1967 extension to the building designed by renowned modernist architect, Patrick Gwynne. This roof was of particular concern as it had an original 50 year old asphalt covering, which had clearly come to the end of its life.
Despite the roof being only 100sq m in size, the area had an incredible 31 roof lights to replace and work around. With so many roof lights in a small place, the detailing lent itself to a liquid product, and Sika Liquid Plastics worked alongside BriggsAmasco and building surveyors, W R Dunn, to make sure the roofing solution would be in keeping with the buildings heritage, while offering a stunning new feature in the atrium roof.

When it comes to successful roof installation – the devil is in the detail
Bur, single ply, hot melt, green roof, rooflights or solar PV… Whatever the roofing system being installed, it is absolutely vital to get the small details right or roof failure will fast become an expensive problem. Dave Maginnis, managing director at BriggsAmasco, explains how to ensure your roof not only looks good, but remains weathertight for years to come.

Radflex and BriggsAmasco complete major department store project
The 11,000m2 rooftop parking deck at the prestigious combined Waitrose and John Lewis at Home store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, has been completed by BriggsAmasco and Radflex Contract Services.
BriggsAmasco – appointed to the project by consultants Bowmer & Kirkland – initially developed plans to deliver thermal insulation, lightweight concrete and Permapark waterproofing and wearing courses on the roof deck parking area.
Given high client and tenant quality requirements, it was decided to use mastic asphalt, incorporating Radflex jointing systems. Mastic asphalt is durable – it is BBA certified in excess of 50 years – recyclable, carbon-zero, solvent- free, has excellent fire performance and is installed by trained craftsmen to ensure a quality finish.

BriggsAmasco breathes life into ageing housing
In England there are around 2.5 million housing association tenants. With a national waiting list for social housing now at 1.36 million households or 3.4 million people, any refurbishment work must be carried out quickly and with minimal distruption. Failing roofs, car parks and walkways are a fact of life, especially in the social housing sector – but what are the solutions?
For more than 150 years leading waterproofing and roofing contractor, BriggsAmasco, has been applying practical and technical expertise to a range of new and existing building requirements. This experience and skill is needed like never before with current figures showing one-fifth of Britain’s housing stock is more than 100-years-old. With many of these ageing buildings now in need of regeneration, it’s vital to choose products and systems that deliver long term performance for the client, and in social housing context, that means a fast application for the contractor and minimal distruption to the residents.
