• BriggsAmasco completes 360 solar roof

Architects CDA placed sustainability high on the agenda – working with the college to reduce its carbon footprint and running costs. Following specification of the solar roofing system, which used cylindrical solar modules to be installed by Renewable Resources Energy Solutions Limited, the project required a highly reflective roofing membrane to ensure that the maximum amount of power could be generated at all times.

As well as the need to maximise the roof’s potential to generate power, the building’s remote Aberdeenshire location required a single ply application that would guarantee long term performance and protection from wind uplift. Sarnafil’s White SR (Solar Reflective) membrane fitted the bill perfectly – with Sarnafil registered contractor BriggsAmasco appointed to complete the application.

The single ply membrane with the highest CIGS solar reflectance factor on the market, achieving a staggering 95%, the Sarnafil White SR helped to optimise the performance of the cylindrical solar PV system. With the combination of reflective membranes and the solar system, the new roof is expected to generate around 16,000kWh of energy each year.

Offering speed and ease of application, with additional health and safety benefits as there is no need for hot works, the single ply membrane provided the college with an efficient and cost-effective roofing solution.  British Board of Agrément (BBA) certified to have a life expectancy ‘in excess of 40 years’, the membrane will provide outstanding performance for many years to come.

For several of the new wing’s additional roofs, BriggsAmasco also installed the hot air weldable Sarnafil S327-18EL in light grey. This completed the high performance, long term waterproofing application that ensures the college, staff and students will remain protected from the elements whilst also benefiting from the power generated by a highly innovative roofing application.

  • BriggsAmasco transforms ageing school building with textbook single ply application

Originally built in the 1960s, the school’s lower block has been exposed to almost fifty years of weather and environmental conditions. And despite the concrete-decked felt roof being recovered twenty years ago, it was beginning to show significant deterioration which was causing heat loss, water ingress, ponding and moss build up.

Uninsulated and in desperate need of replacement, a new roofing system was required that would meet both building regulations and the requirements of 1900+ pupils and staff. Part-funded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and project managed by its Infrastructure & Facilities Department’s senior building surveyor, Martin Milner, the project saw BriggsAmasco appointed to install Sarnafil’s G410 15EL Light Grey membrane.

Following the installation of a cut-to-falls insulation system, the final part of the hot air fully adhered system was the application of 1,000m2 of the Sarnafil single ply membrane. With a high level of detailing required around pipe outlets and parapet junctions, the single ply membrane proved ideal with its quick and simple application. Requiring no hot works, it also ensured there was minimal disruption to the school whilst the project was completed.

The new roofing system now provides the school and its occupants with outstanding resistance to weathering and excellent flexibility. Independently assessed and certified by the British Board of Agrément to have a life expectancy in excess of 40 years, the Sarnafil application by BriggsAmasco will continue to deliver outstanding performance for years to come.

  • BriggsAmasco is top of the shops at Westfield Stratford City

Opening to the public on 13th September 2011, Westfield Stratford City is the new £1.45 billion retail and leisure destination in the heart of East London, with a total of 5,000 parking spaces. One of its car parks, located directly over a retail area, required an aesthetic decking system to be installed over an inverted, well-insulated roof to ensure an attractive, watertight surface for cars and pedestrians.

Faced with a tight deadline, other trades on site and the obvious logistical challenges of the application, BriggsAmasco had to use careful project co-ordination to ensure the process would run smoothly. With a sequential installation, use of cranes to transport plant and materials onto the roof and the expertise of its highly skilled team, BriggsAmasco completed the project within the six month timeframe.

For the car park, BriggsAmasco supplied and installed the full specification from the deck up – including Permatec hot melt system, Floormate insulation, Floormate MinK separating layer and the Pardak slab paving system.

The fully bonded Permatec hot melt system was chosen for its waterproofing and environmental credentials. A monolithic system, it was fully bonded to the structural deck and is ideal for inverted or paved roofing areas as it offers a self-sealing capability with rapid setting. This was followed by the application of a 200mm layer of Floormate insulation.

Laid loose over the insulation, BriggsAmasco then applied the Roofmate MinK system in place of a traditional separating layer. This helps to minimise heat loss due to rainwater cooling and therefore reduce the amount of insulation required, providing a cost effective and energy efficient solution for a large urban car park subjected to the unpredictable British weather.

The decking system was completed with the installation of the Pardak paving system on supports. With a proven lifespan of more than 30 years, the paving slabs provide an aesthetically appealing finish, befitting of such a high profile project, combined with the durability required for a heavily trafficked car park surface.

More than 6.5 million shoppers entered Westfield Stratford City shopping centre within its first eight weeks of opening, with many using the stunning new car park. Thanks to the high performance decking system provided by BriggsAmasco, the car park is set to provide a safe and reliable surface as it continues to welcome millions of shoppers every year.
