BriggsAmasco has triumphed at this year’s NFRC Scottish Roofing Contractor of the Year Awards. Its teams’ outstanding delivery of a challenging waterproofing programme as part of the Central Quay residential development in Glasgow earned victory in the ‘Multi-Discipline Project over £250,000’ category.

BriggsAmasco’s success was announced at an NFRC finalists’ event held at The Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow awards on Friday 25^th October. A record 270 contractors, suppliers and merchants from across the Scottish region attended the event, which was hosted by TV and radio personality Tam Cowan.

To come out on top in a hotly contested roofing category is a real badge of honour for our waterproofing teams and the company as a whole.” 

The Central Quay programme comprised 35 roof areas across four steepling tower blocks totalling 3,323m². The huge area was waterproofed by BriggsAmasco using the skillset of five different flat roofing activities: Bauder Bakor Hotmelt; Bauder Thermofol single-ply; Bauder Liquide, Bauder BTRS built-up felt roofing, and IKO Permascreed mastic asphalt levelling screed. It also included paving slab and ballast roof landscaping finishes, as well as a large podium deck 1870m² over an underground car park.

Delivered to the highest standard with a zero-defect sign-off, the Central Quay project further showcased BriggsAmasco teams’ ability to overcome waterproof detail challenges and deliver a range of perfectly executed solutions using mastic asphalt.

A landmark London regeneration project, which enlisted BriggsAmasco’s waterproofing skills as part of a multiple-application roofing programme, has won a coveted RIBA award.

Phase Two of the multimillion-pound Battersea Power Station restoration was announced winner of the 2024 RIBA London Conservation award. BriggsAmasco installed 45,000m² of waterproofing and insulation for the project – one of the largest urban regenerations of its type in Europe – to help transform the once derelict power station into a vibrant mixed-use development containing more than 250 residential apartments, 100 new retail, food and drink outlets, a 2,000-capacity events venue and 500,000ft² of new office space. 

In summarising the success of the ‘deeply impressive’ 220,000m² Battersea Power Station project, RIBA judges highlighted architect Wilkinson Eyre’s creative use of roof space at the site’s residential area. It included garden terraces as part of a shared, biodiverse multiple installation carried out by BriggsAmasco.

Up to 70 full-time BriggsAmasco operatives, ranging from a specialist mastic asphalt installation team to a host of designers and project planners, were assigned to the Battersea Power Station project. Teams installed sedum green roofs using IKO enertherm inverted insulation to create the biodiverse garden terraces, with RIBA judges praising the ‘elevated city square’ aesthetic it created. 

BriggsAmasco waterproofing expertise and IKO’s high-performance mastic asphalt product range also combined to deliver smart, watertight protection to the power station’s main energy centre and its iconic white chimneys.

Tony continued: “Our close working relationship with IKO was key to the successful design and delivery of waterproofing applications across the Battersea Power Station site. Therefore, IKO deserve huge credit for their contribution to this award-winning project.”

BriggsAmasco was proud to showcase its commitment to helping improve the skills of a new generation of roofers at the 2024 Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) Awards by sponsoring the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ category. Congratulations to Frankie Storrie, who walked away as this year’s winner.

Frankie’s triumph was announced during a finalists’ ceremony held in June at London’s Royal Horseguards Hotel. Nearly 200 high-profile industry professionals attended the event, described as the year’s ‘most prestigious’ gathering for the waterproofing industry.

 Tony Lawther, managing director explained “The UK roofing industry is experiencing a huge demand for skilled professionals. Therefore, it’s important companies such as ours do what they can to promote roofing as a viable, fulfilling career for young people. Frankie’s success at the MAC Awards is indictive of the calibre of entrant we hoped the Apprentice of the Year category would attract. He’s talented, hard-working and has real passion for roofing”

Frankie, an apprentice at Oxley Asphalte Roofing Services in Brighton, left school aged 16 without qualifications. Now 17, his mastic asphalt apprenticeship includes a functional skills online course. Frankie has also enrolled at college to study English and Maths alongside his apprenticeship course.

It’s been a sensational few months for Frankie, who was also named ‘Young Roofer of the Year’ at this year’s NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) UK Roofing Awards.

 Tony continued: “Frankie deserves the success that has come his way. He’s an inspiration to young people looking to enter the industry. We wish him the best of luck with his ongoing training. A long and happy roofing career awaits.”

BriggsAmasco’s superb delivery of a logistically challenging roofing programme at a historic lighthouse site has taken the honours at this year’s Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) Awards.

The project, at Sumburgh Head Lighthouse and Visitors Centre in Shetland, was announced ‘General Work, Development and Hybrid Project of the Year’ winner during a spectacular awards ceremony at London’s Royal Horseguards Hotel on 07 June.

Nearly 200 influential members of the roofing and waterproofing sector attended the event, which included an entertaining post-ceremony presentation by England football legend, Stuart Pearce.

Speaking of the awards win, Allan Dorris, Manager at BriggsAmasco’s Glasgow branch, said: “I’m proud of all of my team that delivered this unique project. The logistical planning, design, high quality, insulation and professional management were all befitting of the high standards BriggsAmasco is renowned for. A massive thanks to all the team involved, as well as the Mastic Asphalt Council for organising another fantastic awards event.”

The ‘once-in-a-generation project’ was on behalf of the Shetland Amenity Trust. It meant it was imperative costs were minimised during the roof’s refurbishment, with BriggsAmasco operatives displaying the utmost care, attention and professionalism in carrying out the work whilst the centre’s accommodation blocks were occupied by holidaymakers. The team’s performance at the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse also earned industry acclaim with victory in the Mastic Asphalt category at this year’s NFRC UK Roofing Awards.

BriggsAmasco has scooped a prized industry accolade for its delivery of a first-class roof installation at a world class visitor attraction.

The company was adjudged winner of the Mastic Asphalt category at the esteemed NFRC UK Roofing Awards. BriggsAmasco was awarded for its expert performance at Sumburgh Head Lighthouse and Visitors Centre. The project, which took place in Shetland’s remote, inclement environs, involved supplying the historic site’s engine room with a smart new watertight roof.

The Sumburgh Head Lighthouse roof installation, on behalf of the Shetland Amenity Trust, was a once-in-a-generation project for BriggsAmasco. Operatives not only had spells of wild and wintry weather to contend with, they had to carry out the work whilst the site’s accommodation blocks and visitor centre remained open. Hence, this mastic asphalt-based refurbishment was as much a triumph of BriggsAmasco’s project management skills in upholding visitor safety, as it was the team’s installation prowess.

Additionally, the Shetland Amenity Trust’s charity status meant BriggsAmasco operatives needed to work at pace to ensure the client’s strict budget was not infringed. Briggs teams delivered on all counts, making it a landmark installation for all involved.

Tony continued: “The Sumburgh Head Lighthouse is definitely one of our more notable projects. It demonstrates that no matter how challenging the conditions, location or installation requirements, our teams have the skills and diligence to deliver what is required. Their talent and professionalism know no bounds.”

BriggsAmasco received its NFRC award at a finalists’ ceremony held at the InterContinental London – The O2. The evening was hosted by comedian, actor and presenter Hal Cruttenden.

BriggsAmasco is a dual finalist following the shortlisting of two of its roofing projects at this year’s Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) Awards.

The projects at Everton football stadium, and Sumburgh Head Lighthouse and Visitors Centre have been nominated in the ‘General Work, Development and Hybrid Project of the Year’ category.

At Everton Stadium, which is due to open in 2025 at the former Bramley-Moore dock site on Liverpool’s waterfront, BriggsAmasco operatives overcame challenging conditions to complete a huge multiple roof installation.  Nearly 15,000m² of mastic asphalt waterproofing was installed across two levels of the 52,000-capacity stadium, along with 5,000m² of asphalt paving to demarcated roofing areas. The site’s exposed waterfront location meant operatives had to overcome high winds and accommodate a raft of complex roof detailing to complete a project that will herald a new era for the Premier League football club when they take-up residence at the stadium for the start of the 2025/26 season.

This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) focuses on the benefits of staying active for a healthier, happier life. The programme, ‘Movement: Moving more for our mental health’, which takes place from May 13^th to May 19^th, is on behalf of the Mental Health Foundation. BriggsAmasco highlights the company’s commitment to enshrining employees’ mental wellbeing, which is essential to maintaining a contented, productive workplace.

As one of the country’s leading roofing contractors, BriggsAmasco is well aware of the pressures the job can bring. Roofing can pose great physical demands, which over time can take a mental toll. Roofing is one of the more challenging building sectors to work in, this is due to the risks associated with working at height. Spending periods working away from home and loved ones can add to mental pressures, with toiling in a male dominant environment making it perhaps difficult for those to open-up about their problems. The suffering-in-silence issue is one we’ve spent the past few years across all areas of BriggsAmasco business.

Mental Health Awareness Initiatives

We ensure that staff and operatives are fully aware that their mental health, wellbeing and safety is the company’s number one priority. To aid us in this endeavour we have mental health first aid instructors who provide the necessary training for individuals to become mental health first aiders. This has led to staff being better equipped to spot developing behaviours that indicate a mental health issue. These might include a change to a person’s demeanour or personal appearance. Each of these potential red flags could help assign someone a source of help.

Staff feedback

The comments from our training course attendees have been extremely positive. Our instructors have earned praise for their excellent engagement and understanding of the course’s objectives. Others have spoken positively about group interaction making it easier for individuals to discuss mental health issues. The ultimate compliment is from employees telling us how they felt better equipped to spot signs of stress and mental illness in others.

Mental Health Awareness Benefits

Whilst we cannot divulge personal details, we have seen a reduction in staff-operative absenteeism due to anxiety or stress. This is a huge win for everyone. It fully endorses the long-held importance we’ve placed on staff mental wellness. It’s why, several years ago, we introduced a programme involving two dedicated mental health instructors. This was crucial to us keeping abreast of mental health issues and keeping staff and operatives informed of any new training requirements. Our development of mental health first aider courses ensure support is available for our staff throughout the UK.

BriggsAmasco has 36 mental health first aiders and two dedicated mental health first aid instructors. Our Mental Health First Aid Instructors deliver a full two-day Mental Health First Aid Course, as well as refresher training when required. Mental Health Awareness training is also provided as part of our company induction.

It’s Good to Talk

BriggsAmasco welcomes initiatives such as Mental Health Awareness Week. The more people are encouraged to talk about mental health issues, the less they will suffer from what is sadly a very prevalent problem. Four in five suicides are men, with suicide the biggest cause of death for men under 35¹. In 2020, reported suicide rates amongst construction workers were 3.7 times higher than the national average².

In terms of further training initiatives, BriggsAmasco is in the process of delivering refresher courses to all previously qualified Mental Health First Aiders. We are also in the process of recruiting Mental Health First Aiders, who will complete a two-day course at company branches throughout the country.

Our commitment to providing staff with the best possible mental health support remains absolute.
