The UK’s leading waterproofing specialists, BriggsAmasco, has scooped the ‘Green’ award at this year’s Mastic Asphalt Awards.
A new award for 2008, the company took pole position in the green category for its recent work at Potterrow University, Edinburgh. Part of a £40milllion new build scheme, the Informatics building at Potterrow University was designed from the outset to have the highest BREEAM rating to be achieved in Scotland to date. The aim was to achieve a rating of Excellent with a score of 71% – currently the score is 72.5%.
The architect, in collaboration with BriggsAmasco, was concerned with the long term sustainability of the roof area and chose to specify mastic asphalt, also allowing the specification to satisfy the BREEAM criteria. The material’s superior green credentials, durability and quality finish plus its robust nature, longevity and low maintenance costs made it the ideal choice for this scheme.

Sustainability is of paramount concern for all involved in the building industry and we are aware that we must look at the best way of minimising any potential environmental impact. At Potterrow University, we considered the use of a range of systems at design phase and recognised the use of mastic asphalt was the ideal solution, allowing us to meet all of our design and installation needs”.
Scottish Region NFRC
BriggsAmasco won the Active Roofing Systems category, in the 2008 Scottish NFRC awards, for a Green Roofing Project at the Aulton Community Centre in Seaton, Aberdeen.
The project for Aberdeen City Council comprises a series of three elegantly curved roofs spanning the Aulton Community Centre at Seaton. Covering some 1,000sq.m, the sedum clad roofs, which extend from eight to 14m in length, start from just two degrees increasing to a 32 degree slope.
The complete Index system incorporates 170mm of insulation, 5mm of Proteaduo (the BBA approved APP/SBS composite membrane), Defend Antiroot (which conforms to the FLL Standard) and Flexter Mineral on all exposed details. The Index Insta sedum blanket was delivered to site cut to size.
BriggsAmasco was also short-listed for work on the Conan Doyle Medical Centre in Liberton, Edinburgh.

At the prestigious FRA Awards ceremony held in London on the 1st of March 2007, BriggsAmasco were finalists in two of the four categories.
In the New Build Best Project, BriggsAmasco were runners-up, for the Green Roof at The City of Edinburgh Council Offices.

The Specialist in Construction Awards – Roofing

The prestigious Specialists in Construction Awards took place on May 10th at the London Hilton Hotel. The awards are sponsored and organised by Construction News and supported by the National Specialist Contractors Council and the Specialist Engineering Contractors Group and judged by an independent panel of experts.
The judging was based on the submission of a 1000 word summary of what makes our company the best in its sector of the Construction Industry, so it was a look at every aspect of the way our business is organised and run and on one project, where we featured our growing involvement with green roofs and sustainability, namely the Edinburgh City Council contract.
In the final, our entry won against entries from some of our major competitors in the roofing industry.

BriggsAmasco were extremely pleased to be nominated for the finals of the “Roofing Specialist of the Year” category, in the 2007 Specialist in Construction Awards.
