In what was a major evening of success for BriggsAmasco, the company’s waterproofing applications at Justice Mill and Raigmore Hospital were selected as the best projects completed in the last twelve months in the Sustainability and Reinforced Bituminous Membrane categories.

With environmental considerations at the forefront of the challenging architectural design at Justice Mill, the hot-melt roofing system had to provide more than just traditional protection from rainwater. BriggsAmasco also overcame several challenges caused by the roof’s terracing and structure, completing the waterproofing application of seventeen different areas of a multi-level terraced roof.

‘We were delighted to have won this award and have our approach to sustainability recognised’ said Tony Lawther, Operations Director of BriggsAmasco. ‘Our company has led the way in helping to make the roofing industry more green and sustainable and this award is testament to that’.

At Raigmore Hospital, BriggsAmasco utilised high-performance materials, outstanding workmanship and the company’s expertise during the application of 1,200m² of 5mm thick IKO Mach One bituminous membrane. Completing the waterproofing and roofing system within a challenging eight week time frame, the company also caused minimal disruption to the hospital staff below.

BriggsAmasco was also a finalist in the Safety, Health and Environment Award, and was nominated twice in the Single Ply category for the company’s projects at Bridge of Don Academy and Riverbank Primary School, recognising delivery of some of the industry’s most successful waterproofing applications this year.

The awards were organised and held by the NFRC at the Thistle Glasgow Hotel. The event, sponsored by Cupa Natural Slate, saw some fifteen roofing contractors from across Scotland hoping to win in a range of categories that included Vertical Cladding, Roof Slating and Liquid Applied Waterproofing.

Accepting the awards are Graeme Douglas IKO, Steve Adams Manager Aberdeen, Roger Welsh Manager Glasgow, Tony Lawther Operations Manager & Steve Lamb BDM Scotland.

In going above and beyond standard industry requirements, the team scored 98/100 in recognition for the company’s work across several areas including design, production, safety, environment and quality control.

On Friday 10th June 2011, over 150 of the UK mastic asphalt industry’s key members gathered at London’s One Whitehall Place & Royal Horseguards Hotel for the 2011 MAC Awards. Nominated for the company’s project at King’s Cross Station, BriggsAmasco was once again recognised for delivering one of the industry’s very best projects over the last twelve months.

BriggsAmasco carried out resurfacing works using a mastic asphalt system at KIng’s Cross Station, to improve platforms one to eight during the £500 million station redevelopment. As one of the busiest stations in Europe, planning was imperative in the continued success of the scheme and all works were carefully scheduled to ensure minimal disruption to the station.

Each platform was worked on separately to avoid closure of more than one platform at any one time, allowing station operations to continue relatively unaffected. BriggsAmasco also completed the work at night over a three month period to ensure the station could continue as normal during the day.

The awards were organised and held by MAC, a non-profit making independent body which represents the UK’s top 70 mastic asphalt contractors, as well as the  leading manufacturer, Permanite.

The company had previously been recognised for the quality management of its businesses and has now been awarded ISO 14001 and 18001 which embrace both the environment and health and safety.

BriggsAmasco works closely with its suppliers and partners on all environmental issues and has been a pioneer in helping to make the roofing industry green and sustainable.

Health and safety is paramount at BriggsAmasco and the company’s risk management strategy reduces the potential for accidents and protects the workforce.

As the first roofing contractor in the UK to achieve “Investor in People” status, training and employee development is a key part of the business. In the last 12 months some 3,000 days have been allocated to individual staff and operative training.

The company was established by William Briggs in Arbroath in 1865 and today it operates from 14 offices across the UK. In the last 12 months some 1298 contracts were carried out by BriggsAmasco varying in value from £1k to £5million. They include major retail developments, commercial buildings and much more.

Held at the London Hilton Hotel on Tuesday 22 March, the awards were attended by some 80 companies shortlisted across the awards’ 18 categories. As a finalist, BriggsAmasco has once again been recognised as one of the industry’s top specialist contractors providing expertise, quality and skills in roofing.

In the last 12 months, BriggsAmasco carried out some 1298 projects ranging in value from £1k to £5million. These included the high-profile roofing projects at Central Saint Giles and the new Stratford Shopping Centre Development alongside the Olympic complex, both in London.

Supported by the National Specialist Contractors Council, the Construction News Specialist Awards is the only awards scheme that celebrates the achievements of Specialist Contractors within the construction industry. The nomination for BriggsAmasco further reinforces the company’s position as the market leader in roofing and waterproofing.

Steve Ricketts, an estimator at BriggsAmasco’s Manchester branch, has been presented with the Institute of Roofing (IoR) Student of the Year award at the IoR’s 30^th AGM.

Having scored high marks in his examinations – gaining a distinction overall – Steve was presented with a trophy and certificate by IoR Education & Training Committee Chairman, Bob Cooper FIoR. He also received a cheque for £250 from sponsors’ Redland Training Centre, South Cerney.

Speaking about the training course and the examinations at the Redland Training Centre, Steve said: “The training course offered a nice balance of practical roofing and construction knowledge, health & safety and business management. It was quite daunting to have a full day of exams after so long without doing any! But I found I either knew the answers from the course or could use common sense to have a stab at it.”

At BriggsAmasco, we’re committed to the aims of the IoR and encouraged Steve to become a member as part of his professional development. “The IoR is an industry recognised body and being a member of it, I believe, shows that you are a competent and qualified professional within the roofing and construction industry,” explained Steve. “That can only be a benefit to me and BriggsAmasco.”

The UK’s leading waterproofing roof specialists, BriggsAmasco, is celebrating, having been named ‘Contractor of the Year’ at this year’s Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) awards.

The accolade was presented in recognition of the company’s use of mastic asphalt at the new Westfield Shopping Centre development in Stratford. BriggsAmasco has been involved in a range of waterproofing schemes across the site including flagship John Lewis and Marks and Spencer stores, where 10,000 square metres of mastic asphalt has been installed. The 1.9 million sq ft Westfield Stratford City will be the largest urban shopping centre in Europe and will support the continued regeneration and ongoing development of the area.’

The annual MAC awards were held at the Royal Horseguards hotel in London where manufacturers, contractors and suppliers gathered to celebrate industry achievements across the year. The Contractor of the Year award is considered the highlight of the evening and Frank Lynch, Operations Director of BriggsAmasco (left in photo), accepted the award from MAC Chairman David Maginnis (right in photo).

Frank Lynch commented on the company’s award win: “This is a real honour for us and has definitely been a highlight in our 2010 calendar to date.

“BriggsAmasco is a long established and well recognised roofing contractor that carries out work on many landmark buildings and developments across the UK. Our experience working with mastic asphalt is second to none and we are delighted to see our work being recognised at a large scale scheme such as Westfield Stratford by an important trade organisation such as MAC.”

BriggsAmasco’s Norwich branch gained the distinguished “Perfect Delivery” award from Morgan-Ashurst, for their outstanding working in the construction of Suffolk New College.

BriggsAmasco has been awarded a Gold Certificate for registering more than 75% of its workforce under the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. The company actively supports the use of CSCS in improving the competence of its workforce.
