BriggsAmasco tops award-winning Justice Mill development

The innovative development, built by Miller Construction for the Hazledene Group, is split between 13,000m² of high quality office space and the Park Inn Hotel which comprises 185 bedrooms and fitness facilities. With environmental considerations at the forefront of the challenging architectural design, the roofing system had to provide more than just traditional protection from rainwater.

The architects specified the durable and self-healing monolithic waterproofing membrane Hydrotech MM6125 from Alumasc which proved ideal for a development with such complex roof details. The roof incorporates outdoor space, balconies and high level step terracing accessible from the hotel, in addition to a flat roof area housing large quantities of roof-top plant.

Faced with these split level challenges, BriggsAmasco’s specialist team installed a total of 3500m² of Hydrotech MM6125 with the bituminous rubber blend allowing fast and efficient installation over the complex roof details.  This was followed by the installation of extruded installation boards and a range of ballast including 20-40mm River Washed Pebbles and 50mm Natural Paving Slabs.

The first hot-melt waterproofing system to be introduced to the UK construction market, Hydrotech MM6125 boasts a respected performance record spanning 45 years. It is manufactured using 20% post-consumer recycled material and is certified to ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standard.  Insulations used as part of the Hydrotech system carry a BREEAM ‘A’ summary rating as well as Zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than 5.

With Aberdeen being at the forefront of the international oil industry, BriggsAmasco played a significant part in this high profile development setting the standard for quality, design and sustainability that benefits a city in the world spotlight.

BriggsAmasco raises the roofs at Northfield Academy

Appointed to replace all the existing asphalt roofs to improve the school’s thermal performance from an E rating, a Sarnafil Single Ply Roof management system was specified by client Aberdeen City Council for its proven value, credible guarantee and exceptional waterproofing protection.

With works taking place during term time, BriggsAmasco had to contend with the extreme weather conditions and a busy site whilst also ensuring minimal disruption was caused to the school. To deliver the project on time and adhere to the strict no naked flame policy, the hot air weldable Sarnafil G410-15EL fitted the bill perfectly.

Following a detailed survey by BriggsAmasco, its experienced installation team first stripped off the existing roof and then laid 120mm thick PIR insulation boards.  The team applied 3,400m2 of Sarnavap 5000E, a 1mm thick self-adhesive vapour control layer, to ensure moisture vapour permeability in accordance with the British Standard EN 1931.

The final part of the hot air fully adhered system was the application of Sarnafil G410-15EL single ply membrane which required a high level of detailing in terms of wall, parapet junctions and rooflights. The cold-adhered technique proved particularly advantageous on the school site, meeting health and safety requirements for both the operatives and the school pupils and staff.

BriggsAmasco’s exceptional workmanship and attention to detail, along with the use of a market proven product from Sarnafil contributed to a high performance roofing system on the academy which is guaranteed to stand the test of time.

Top grade roofing installation at Riverbank School

Although much of the refurbishment was completed during the school holidays, it was still vital that any roofing works would have a minimal impact on the buildings below. To achieve this, BriggsAmasco specified a Sarnafil roofing system comprising Sarnafil G410-EL, Sarnavap 5000E VCL and 120mm thick PIR insulation – all applied without any need for hot works.

For the Sarnafil roofing system a vapour control layer, Sarnavap 5000E VCL was applied, as well as a high performance 120mm thick PIR insulation – all specified and installed by BriggsAmasco.

Across the seven roofs, the highly skilled team of BriggsAmasco operatives installed some 1,800m2 of the multi-layer, hot air weldable Sarnafil G410-EL to complete the high performance, long term waterproofing application that ensured teachers and students were unaffected during the application and will remain protected from the elements for many years to come.

Faced with a challenging, time restricted application across a number of varying sized roofs, BriggsAmasco were able to deliver a new roofing system that not only delivered on performance, but also offered a speedy application. Thanks to BriggsAmasco, all seven roofs met and exceeded the client’s expectations and will continue to do so under the many challenges of the unpredictable Scottish weather.

BriggsAmasco roof makes the grade at Bridge of Don Academy

At the high level refurbishment, BriggsAmasco was appointed to install a new flat roof on the school’s main building. Providing the full contract specification in-house – including selection and installation of PIR insulation, vapour control layer and waterproofing membrane – the UK’s leading waterproofing and roofing specialist delivered the project on time and on budget.

With timescales and minimal disruption key to the project success, BriggsAmasco specified a Sarnafil roofing system – renowned for high quality and long term performance. As part of the renovation, eight new sunpipes were also installed to improve the academy’s natural lighting – for which the simple application of the Sarnafil system once again met the challenge perfectly.

By specifying 1,600m2 of the multi-layer, hot air weldable Sarnafil G410-EL, the company eliminated the need for hot works on the rooftop so the application could be completed safely and more efficiently. BriggsAmasco completed all the rooftop work without any disruption, allowing the teachers and students below to carry on with day to day activities.

An additional 1,600m2 of Sarnavap 5000E VCL vapour control layer was cold applied to the substrate, before a layer of 120mm thick PIR insulation was installed by BriggsAmasco’s highly-skilled team. With no compromise on quality, the company provided a new roof that offers outstanding thermal performance and a stunning new aesthetic.

Despite the size of the roof and the challenging deadline, the new roofing system was delivered to an exceptional standard, ensuring a fully bonded totally waterproof system that will serve the building for many years to come. High-performance materials, outstanding workmanship and the expertise demonstrated by BriggsAmasco ensured that the new roof met and exceeded the client’s demands.

BriggsAmasco decks out new Waitrose car park

In August 2010, BriggsAmasco was called in to strip the supermarket car park’s existing tarmac and relay an entirely new waterproof surface. The decking system had to provide a waterproof layer between the topside and the underground car park areas, as previously these areas had been prone to flooding during wet weather.

With a strict four month deadline to complete the installation in time for the busy Christmas shopping period, BriggsAmasco specified and installed 50mm thick mastic asphalt. Chosen for its durability, value for money and ability to provide a watertight surface, mastic asphalt also offered a rapid installation that proved perfect for Waitrose in Brackley.

As the supermarket was to remain entirely operational throughout the refurbishment, it was vital that the BriggsAmasco team could complete all works with minimal disruption to the day to day running of the store. To achieve this, a carefully structured sequential application process was put in place where only a small part of the car park was out of use at any one time.

Using a highly skilled team of operatives and fast-applied mastic asphalt, BriggsAmasco were able to complete the application on time and on budget, allowing the car park to be fully operational for Christmas – the store’s busiest period of the year.
